Sure you can install it into your forum root folder. You have to upload the whole "chat"-Folder to your forum root and configure the inc/config.php properly. Besides the settings during the install process should be even properly too. The forum root install method is recommended when you want run a non-public-chat or for LiveSupportMode.

Uploading only the content of the chat folder into your forum root will cause errors...
