Attachments without uploading

I originally posted on vbulletin.com as I wasnt sure if it was possible without a mod or not.. But it seems like its gonna require a mod ..

Now, I was wondering if this is possible. To still ftp into webserver and place my files in the attachment directory (same one vBulletin uses)... Then somehow, add an attachment via vBulletin (tell it where on the server to find the file).. It wouldnt upload the file as its already there, but it would make a new record in the attachments table and i'd be able to use that in a post. The purpose of this is to prevent guests being able to download the files, you would have to be logged in to see/download the attachment..

Any help/suggestions would be appreciated...

What I need is a mod that is only accessible by admin... That allows me to choose a file in the attachment directory on the webserver.. The mod will then add a record to the attachments table in the db, recording file size, name etc of the selected file. Basically its adding an attachment to the forums without the upload part.

I did have a quick search of these forums, but couldnt seem to find anything similar..

Any help is appreciated....
