avatar resizing

on my site im had away with profile pictures and have user upload there pictures as avatars, the thing is i allow them to upload avatar that can be upto 600 x 600, this is fine on there profile page but in the post bit this messes the site / load time up big time is there a way to resize the image just for the post bit cheers
