GZip on Apache 2

As far as I can see there are 3 ways to do GZip compression on Apache 2:

Using vB's built in GZip feature
Using PHP zlib.output_compression
Using mod_deflate

I think I prefer method 3, as this would also compress HTML, JavaScript, CSS and so on.

But I wonder which one gives the best performance?
