add additional user option on registration

How to add additional user option on registration and then check it after successful activation of a new account?

This additional option should be a checkbox.

I have created new product, which adds a piece of html code to the registration form. But what name of the checkbox should be to be able to read it after account activation? And which hook to use to handle success account activation?
