Demo site - how to build

What are the steps in creating a demo site to test stuff on? I'm getting tired of wrecking my main site during my learning process. By the way, I am real new to all this so I need really easy to understand directions.

Thanks so much for any help I may receive and forgive my noobish ways during this time of learning.
