How to add Simple PHP code into header of each page?

I want to add a simple php code to a header of each page of my forum.
Problem is that if I edit the template and add something even so simple as:

PHP Code:


			
<?

echo "Welcome...";

?>

, it doesn't work.

Can someone tell me how to go about this?
