Changing multiple templates at once?

Is it really necessary to edit each individual template one by one each time you make a change to a template? What if all the styles had one parent style; would modifying the parent style change them all?

Sorry if the answer is really obvious, but I just upgraded from 3.0.2 to 3.6.8 and have a lot of work to do on styles.
