Can't switch styles

I just upgraded from 3.0.x to 3.6.2. The upgrade has been successful, except for this problem with my styles.

I deleted all, but one style after the upgrade to make a clean start. Then I created a child of the main style. Both the parent and the child are visible in the drop down menu, but the styles won't switch when selected.

I have tried with both IE and Firefox with the same results. What should I look for?
