is it possible to have the profile picture as avatar?

Optimum:
small profile picture thumbnail in posts and member list, large profile picture on the profile page.

Real thumbnails require gdlib knowledge, so I guess browser resize via height and width is the lesser of two evils, also less hacking.
I´m willing to try it, since most profile pictures are already saved at a fairly good jpg compression rates, and most people should have good connections anyway.

So how do I insert the profile pic in
A) the members list template
B) legacy postbit template
I found corresponding variables, but they already included the surrounding HTML for image tags, so I couldn´t insert the height/width resize.
