How to add columns?

Hello!

I want to add a little image border to each side of the forum. Like a shadow or outer glow thing. So basically, I need to add one column on the left side of the board and one column on the right side of the board and then use a background image in those columns. How would I do that?

And one more thing. I want to make the board 100% in height. So I want the board to always go from the top to the bottom of the screen no matter how much content there is on the page. Is that possible?
