I am building a project for school what should I use?

Okay, I am in a group of 5 that is building for a 400 level college class a project management software for a local company. It basically will allow them to track how far they are along in their projects for other companies. They build web advertising solnutions. We are sure that we want to use PHP and MySQL to do this. However we have noticed that there a few different versions of MySQL and PHP, we are not sure what the different advantages are of each. We were thinking about using php 5.0 and the newest version of MySQL but we are not sure if there would be any problems with these.

Also does anyone know any good beginner websites to learn php??? I am the only one if the group that has ever used it, and I am not the best.
