Hacks and upgrading vBulletin

Wonering how you can tell which hacks are ok to install and which may present problems when upgrading to a new version of vBulletin? Is there any rules to follow?

What if you have a hack that is causing errors whne upgrading? What is involved in uninstalling a hack?
