removing icons and smilies

Just wondering... I have used other BBS scripts in the past and working on installing another for a friends site and she is considering vBullitin. She currently is using ikonboard which was a big pain to remove the icons and smilies, but ikonboard is such a resource hog that it has all but used up all of the bandwidth available for her site. It runs great, but.....hey, she's not rich either.
From what I see of v-bullitin so far I love it, but I have the enviable task of doing this work for free for a rather busy non-profit community service site... I really don't want to make a career out of it.
How difficult would it be to remove the icons and smilies from the freeware version of vbullitin?
