Week 2 of Database errors 4.2.2

Hi All,

Heading into week 2 of daily

Database error in vBulletin :

mysql_connect() [<a href='function.mysql-connect'>function.mysql-connect</a>]: Too many connections
/home/thesquir/public_html/forums/includes/class_core.php on line 317

errors.

This is out of a clear blue sky, after at least 6 months of entirely satisfactory service/no incidents from our provider- who shall remain unnamed for the time being. I've been chasing them, and after repeated "what's going on?" nagging, they advise that they're 'tweaking the settings'.

I've done a little research and am reasonably certain this isn't my responsibility as forum admin, and that it's not related to vB. Does anyone have a similar experience? Is this serious... a lack of expertise... how much of a problem is this? I'm trying to be patient but can't help wondering what's going on and how hard to push our provider.
