How can I do this?

HI,

I've already asked this on VB's forum, but didn't get back anything I can follow. If I'm going to be able to do this, I'd need to be guided through the process. I'd really appreciate any help given.

This looks like quite a complicated one, but I'd love to be able to do it. I'd like to be able to remove the menu bar with all the login info, and make it into a menu for me to put in the left column.

Where the menu is I'd like to be able to put a welcome message (including it showing the latest amount of members and topics). I'd also like the menu and the welcome messages to change accordingly, when you logged in or not.
