bbcode in a template?

I'm running a hack that pulls data from a template and creates a new post with the contents of that template. It works fine, but I can't do any formatting with it. If I add bbcode tags, I get a parse error.

For example, if I have 2 variables ($question = "What's your name?" and $answer = "Greg"), and a template that looks like this:

$question
$answer

the resulting post looks like this:

What's your name?
Greg

I want it to look like this:

What's your name?
Greg
