Methinks that the header needs some serious livening up; once that's done it should look really nice.

Speaking of which, I like the way even though the page bg is black the text is still black-on-white, easy to read

It's just very bland...

You could do something like the default style set here: spend hours in Photochop making something that stretches across the whole top of the page.
