Ensuring a variant is defined in different template

Just dowloaded & installed the following modification; the moderation checkpoint mod:

I wanted to get the mod to display the name of the mod who checked the thread in the forumdisplay thread title being the template "forumdisplay".

Now ive tried various things to try get it working, but it prompts me to ask how you can define certain variables in different templates. My best example outside of this mod is the postbit_legacy template. The variables like "$post['age']" work but yet in other templates they wont. How is that, and how would you go about correcting that?

In relation to the moderation check mod, I want to get the variable $post[checkedbyu] located in the postbit template, to work in the forumdisplay template.

Questions regarding modifications need to be asked in the modification thread. That is where the support for modifications is - not out here in the main forums.
