Replacing the little squary bulletin boards on the left of category with pic

Hi
I want to replace the little squary bulletin boards on the left of category with a pic or little graphic that I will develop - how to replace / how to insert?
Anyone please advise?

There is by default no image for categories, those are the forums themselves that have the "squary images" next to them, in refrence those are the "status icons" for new posts or no new posts.

Do you want to replace just the two icons themselves or have a different on/off icon for each forum?

If you want to replace just the two default on/off status icons, just name your custom images the same names and upload them via ftp to the correct directory and over write the old ones.

Thanks a lot for that. For months I wondered what those little squares are called - "status icons".

I got 9 forums and wish to repalce each and every status icon on the left with a small graphic/pic. Where do I begin or where are the codes that I will need to change? is it in templates?
Forgive my ignorance.
