I am trying to give my members the ability to chose which fields of their profile are shown to other users. I believe I need to get items on this page: /profile.php?do=privacy
I have set up several "User Profile Field Categories" such as "telephone" and then moved the user profile field into this category. I select the option for "Allow User Privacy OptionsAllow users to hide the category in their profile from other users of their choosing." The help bubble on this says to "This option controls whether the category will appear in the 'Customize Profile' page, allowing users to select whether to hide or display the category's profile block to other users." When I go to the 'Customize Profile' page its all about how to change fonts and colors, it seems a very odd place to have privacy settings. The do=privacy page seems like a logical place. My question is, where should I expect these User profile field categories to show up for my members? thanks for the help, let me know if I need to add more details, Joel |

User Profile Privacy is under User CP > Profile Privacy and it won't show anything to do with fonts or colors (that is Customize Profile). At the top of the page, it will say:

Isn't this profile privacy page related to the "user profile field categories"?
I was on the profile privacy page last night and I saw how it allows a member to set who can view different aspects of their profile. It seemed to me that by using the profile field categories I could add more functionality to this page by grouping profile fields and then letting the user set who could see the information. Am I totally off base here? If so, why does the help section state "This option controls whether the category will appear in the 'Customize Profile' page, allowing users to select whether to hide or display the category's profile block to other users." That statement led me to the customize profile page, which seemed completely wrong. Joel |

I don't know why it talks about the Customize Profile page when it is the Profile Privacy page. Perhaps post about this on vb.com so they can fix the wording there.

Do you know of any use for these categories? it sure seems like a useful tool to let the members choose what profile elements they let people view. Maybe its a broken feature?

I use the categories on my site so that my users can set the privacy for the profile fields I put in them. That is what the categories are for. I was agreeing that the wording in the admin cp help is incorrect.

Lynne,
I have gone back and double checked my settings, maybe I'm missing something. What I want to do is allow my members to decide if they want their ethnicity to be viewable on their profile or not. Let me run down what I've done: 1) Clean install of 3.8.1 2) Under vBulletin Options: User Profile Options:Allow Users to Edit Profile Privacy (YES) 3) Under Usergroup Manager: All Registered Users: Profile Customization Permissions: Can Edit Profile Privacy (YES) 4) Under User Profile Fields: New Profile Category "Ethnicity" :Allow User Privacy Options (YES) 5) Under User Profile Field: I selected the category "Ethnicity". I wasn't sure about making the field private or not,so I've tried both settings. I have a link in my usercp for "Profile Privacy" but only the default categories show up. Am I missing some hidden setting somewhere? Can you think of anything? Thanks so much for your help, Joel |

What is the Display Page for the Profile Field - it should be Edit Your Details.

I tried several different locations thinking maybe that had something to do with it, but none worked. I have it set to "Edit Your Details" now. What has me stumped is that I have the link to "Profile Privacy" on my nav, and the standard categories are there, just not the one that I added.

This is very odd because it really does work on my site. I have a new category called More About Me and it shows up in the list:
