Custom notifications area

I am creating a custom notifications area using the code from the standard navbar template but not using the breadcrumbs code so only the welcome_x_y link and PM notifications etc

I have the problem where it is fine when you have private message notification when you click the drop down it acts as it should but as soon as you have no notifications and click the drop down the drop down will fly off screen.

Any ideas how I can prevent it doing this? Thank you
