My vbulletin just all of a sudden started running slow, and only in Internet Explorer. I tried it myself and it is slow for me. Some of my best members are getting irratated. Can someone look at this and tell me what I should do to fix this problem.
Here is a letter that I received from one of my posters: Hey Michael... As you know I'm a big fan of your forum.. A while back I asked about the site logging down. This has not been cured for me. I just spent a lot of time just trying to reply to a post and, to be honest, it's a real pain watching it spin and getting a 'can not connect' message...Each time that happens I jump to my bookmarks and instantly have access to another web site, so I know it isn't my pc.. I don't know what needs be done but the enjoyment of using a site is lessened when I can't even scroll through the various threads and make replies or post, even if it is not a constant problem... I'd have sent this complaint in a PM but your forum site won't let me do that.. ~R |

Firefox has a feature called "code correction" which allows programmers to be lazy. See, the feature will automatically close tags for programmers. This means that when you test a website in Firefox - it will fix mistakes (and developers won't even know that there is something wrong with the code).
Try disabling your modifications one at a time and testing the board out for speed. One of them might be messing up. If nothing fixes that, it might be your skin. Try creating a new style and see if you still get the problem. Another thing you might consider is the URL that you've specified in the BBURL setting for vBulletin does not have "www." in it. This is normally not a problem, but it might affect the javascript for AJAX on IE. |

Also, try running your pages through an html validator. You may have to view the page source and copy/paste it into the validator so it can view what logged in users see.

I'm using Chrome (don't know why) and I'm not having no problems. But only wth IE. I tried to disable my mods that I have added since this started and nothing...it's still slow. I tried the HTML Validator and got a weird answer. Didn't quite know how to read it, and I've had my skin for quite a long time, wouldn't know why it would be messing up now?

I just went through it and if it was any faster I'd be jelous. If you're using IE8 disable the compatibilty setting in tools. In the ACP also is a setting to disable the IE7 header being sent to IE8 users. That sped things up at my place.
Also run your maint programs from the bottom left of the ACP. BE CAREFUL! Some only get run on a have to basis. Have your members having problems run clean up software like ccleaner and the browser cleaning from the tools menu in IE. CCleaner can be got from www.filehippo.com A lot of times problems with forums are on the user end. |

ok, now everyone is telling me that it is only in Firefox and not in IE as I had thought. I cannot re-create it in Firefox, it seems to work for me just fine.

Is it the site in your sig? It does have validation errors on it. Like I said, fix those and see if it helps.

Here's the message I get from the validator: No Character Encoding Found! Falling back to UTF-8. None of the standards sources gave any information on the character encoding labeling for this document. Without encoding information it is impossible to reliably validate the document. As a fallback solution, the "UTF-8" encoding was used to read the content and attempt to perform the validation, but this is likely to fail for all non-trivial documents. Read the FAQ entry on character encoding for more details and pointers on how to fix this problem with your document. Unable to Determine Parse Mode! The validator can process documents either as XML (for document types such as XHTML, SVG, etc.) or SGML (for HTML 4.01 and prior versions). For this document, the information available was not sufficient to determine the parsing mode unambiguously, because: the MIME Media Type (text/html) can be used for XML or SGML document types No known Document Type could be detected No XML declaration (e.g <?xml version="1.0"?>) could be found at the beginning of the document. No XML namespace (e.g <html xmlns="http://www.w3.org/1999/xhtml" xml:lang="en">) could be found at the root of the document. As a default, the validator is falling back to SGML mode. No Character encoding declared at document level No character encoding information was found within the document, either in an HTML meta element or an XML declaration. It is often recommended to declare the character encoding in the document itself, especially if there is a chance that the document will be read from or saved to disk, CD, etc. See this tutorial on character encoding for techniques and explanations. ↑ TOP Validation Output: 1 Error Line 1, Column 1: no document type declaration; will parse without validation <meta http-equiv="REFRESH" content="0;url=http://www.lacledeforum.com/forums/ind ✉ The document type could not be determined, because the document had no correct DOCTYPE declaration. The document does not look like HTML, therefore automatic fallback could not be performed, and the document was only checked against basic markup syntax. Learn how to add a doctype to your document from our FAQ, or use the validator's Document Type option to validate your document against a specific Document Type. ↑ TOP Cleaned-up Source Listing with "Tidy" Below is the cleaned up markup for your document, as processed through HTML Tidy.
