is it poossible to show the number of registered members in a phrase?

i have changed my login page drastically to make it the front page for unregistered guests (our site is for mum's and contains private photos etcso we have it set to manually activate new members, however i would like to put a simple phrase on there that says how many people are online, and how many are in the live chat i tried this in the not_logged_no_permission phrase:

There Are Currently $numberregistered people online $chatters of which are chatting live!!

and it doesnt work, what have i done wrong? or will that code just not work in phrases?

You have to use either PHP or <phrase> tags in templates.
