Attachment thumbnail hook/hack advice

Hi all,

I could use a little help if possible.

I want to execute some code at the point of displaying each thumbnail in a post. I want to be able to run an ajax request based on the attachment id, and return/update some my own information from a custom table. The problem is that i can't see a way of including code at the point and be able to access what the 'current' attachmentid is that i want to deal with.

I think i'm having a bit of a mental block here. Thanks in advance for giving a newbie some help.
