Is there a way Users can customize "New Posts" (Threads/Forums Marked as read)?

Is there a way Users can customize "New Posts" (Threads/Forums Marked as read)?

Hello..

Most of the members on my board are used to: Inactivity/Cookie Based

Out of frustration, since I was missing posts, I recently changed it to: Database (no automatic forum marking) . This is making it easier for me and a few other members but confusing others since the board they came from that has now closed was set "Inactivity/Cookie Based".

I want the members as happy as possible so is there a way that I'm missing (I'm new to this) or a hack/mod that will allow each individual user to chose which way they want the "new posts" to show up sort of like they can chose who they want to view threads?
