Default phpBB

Alright guys, no offence, but phpBB is fastly becoming a great forum software option. http://area51.phpbb.com/phpBB22/ especially the 2.1/2.2 versions. They are pretty much as good if not better than vB2, and I dont know about you, but I'd rather switch to phpBB than renew my vB license, because it's good, and it's free, regardless of the name attached to it.

Your thoughts?

vb2? if your still working with vb2 your behind, renewing your lciense would be well worth it for vb3

vb3 isnt even comparable to the older softwares :\

has phpbb moved their templates into the database yet?

how phpbb 2 is better than vb2 i dont understandt :\

in the long run you cant really compare paided products to freeware ones :\

I used phpBB once. It made me want to cry. >.< Just attempting to mess with the templates was ghastly.

see, the problem is, you havent tryed any of their alpha versions that they have out. just test the features on that board. and now the template system is way easier to work with.

I have dealt with phpBB in many cases, have installed it on many clients and customers forums, and even used it for a personal forum of my own back in the earlier versions (when 1.x.x. was out), though I would not attempt to place it back into a production run.

I am speaking from the current version of my review and personally, editing HTML templates all over the place is not my idea of how customization should be done. Saving HTML files and images takes more time and space than saving a single style file and the images.

I have not used or installed the new version(s), but if it or they are like the current using HTML templates and not using an actual backend for the template system, I personally would not install it.

Uploading files over saving to a DB takes longer, it may not be a great deal longer, but it does mean it prolongs my work because I have to work with more things open then I should have to .

I cannot bash phpBB, the creators and such have came a long way from nothing, they have made a name and it does stick, but I would not use such unless they change a few things around.

A MySQL DB of templates wins over a load of HTML files, IMO (again, not used the new ones, but I presume they are the same).

I agree, it makes backup alot easyer, one could argue that they would rather use a program to edit the html instead of a inbuilt cp editor. But you can solve that with a good back-up script.

phpBB is good, I find it to be very customizable but it may not be as convienient as the vB is to customising templates etc.

phpBB is my favourite free forum and I have worked with it, but working with vB is alot easier and more convienient you might say.
