messagearea is buggy

I noticed that messagearea acts a little weird maybe because of all thefancy wsywig features. In a custom page, is there a way to specify toonly use the simple messagearea? I did a find in newthread.php and thetemplate for messagearea to see if I can find a condition but nothingpops up.
