awareness - HTL and other hack installers

Hi guys,

I've installed HTL and was reading abt another hack installer system here.
I think its about time vB users think of selecting or even making a good hack installer. They can select from the existing ones or develop a new one. Standardising their hack to a single installer would be a big help to lot of admins who are not code-savy as well as increase popularity of vB as a preferred board software.

This has been a major problem (and sore point) since the birth of vB3

Unfortunatly the HTL is not an accepted installer as vborg managment dont want to have hacks that are relient on another hack for instilation etc.

I have used the HIS for my last 2 releases. some may argue that you have to install it and therefore hacks using it are again dependant on it .... but in reality all you need to do with the his is upload the files.

In the days of vB2 ... installers wernt an issue but vB3 is far more complex especially with phrases whick means the installers need to be more complex.

hmmm..... you're right, the vBorg mgmt does have a point there BUT i think it will be about time that they came up with their own installer if they dont wanna add a third party installer to vB. I do not see a single board that can survive on a plain vanilla vB software.

btw, what's HIS? i did a search on vB3 forum but did not come up with anything. wud u recommend it?

I have used it for my last 2 hack releases and at first was a little confusing to work out but i think is is a great little installer and will make installing and releasing hacks a lot easier

Hack Installer System. I developed it, mostly since I needed an installer for all my hacks, and standardizing it is usually A Good Thing.

Basically, as far as I know, there are two installer systems released at vB.org (although I am sure I remember one more not released here). That is the HTL (Hack Tracking Log) developed by Kura, and the HIS (Hack Installer System). The HTL was basically made useless at vB.org since it requires an installation. Therefore, it is required to have an installation not relying on the installation of another hack. It is this fact that I made the HIS.

The HIS needs one database table and that is it, and it creates itself when it is ran the first time, requiring no installation at all. I also have allowed hack authors to package the files for the HIS with their hack. Because of this, it meets vB.org requirements.

Cool. just checked out HIS. think i'll install this weekend.

I guess all we vB board, non-techie, forum admins would like to see is some kinda tool that will help us install cool hacks/mods on our boards. I guess it will also help keep non-serious coders out...specially folks who dont do quality coding (no-offence to anyone here) becoz they will have to meet certain requirements of the installation tool....link14767, u indicated in your HIS release which will help the vB users community in general.
