I've spend about a half hour at this site and the other one, trying to find the answer to this question. Either vbullletin doesn't support boolean searches, or I just haven't had enough coffee this morning.
At any rate, the question: Many users are requesting a way to refer others to a particular post in a thread. The best I can do is by right clicking on the post number at the top of the post, and copy/pasting the URL. However, that only displays the post, and not the post in context. I know, in tiny text at the top of the "post only" screen you can click your way to it, but I'd rather they could just direct them to the post in context of the thread. You know, like an anchor tag works in html. I apologize if this exists, or if the mod has been written, but can someone direct me to the instructions for this? Thanks |

I got round this by having post numbers display in every post, then creating [p] tags, all the user has to do is type [p]12345[/p] (where '12345' is the post number) and it creates a link to that post.
Example: http://www.bowlandcentral.com/forum/...ad.php?t=27793 |

Thanks Mark, but that is the situation I'm trying to bypass. It sends you to a "post only" window, and then even if one clicks the thread name at the top, it takes you to the beginning of the thread.
What brought this up, is that users on my forum want to refer to other posts when they reply. I wrote instructions, and came up with about 9 steps. (Nine steps!!!!!) There has to be an easier way. My forum people are not the most computer literate on the planet, and I'm hoping for just a simple button to click, or some copy/paste operation. Here are the instructions I posted, which is what makes me want to find something SIMPLE. To refer someone to a particular post: 1. Find the post you want to refer people to 2. Notice the little number at the right side of the header. (See it up there? This post is #3 ) 3. Right-click the number. 4. Click "Properties" 5. Select the address shown. In this case it is https://vborg.vbsupport.ru/showpost....05&postcount=3 6. Select and copy it. (I've found selecting from left to right works best, as sometimes the very end of the address doesn't show until you select it. 7. Paste it into the post you are composing. After you follow the process described above, and someone clicks your link, they will be taken to the post, in its own isolated window, and thus out of context. In able to see the post in context, the reader must then: 1. Click the title of the thread, which is displayed in small text at the top of the "post only" window. Then they will see the thread which contains that post. 2. Scroll down to the post to see the most recent post it is replying to. I am hoping there is some "user friendly" hack to avoid this complicated process to achieve a simple result. You have a GREAT site, by the way, Mark. |

vB already has post tags - [ POST ] and [ /POST ]
Just hover over the quote button to see the post number (p=xxxxxx in the url) and then enclose this is the post tags. You get the correct url generated to open the thread and land you on the correct post. i.e. [ POST ] 567405 [ /POST ] is below ; [POST] 567405 [/POST] ![]() |

Ah yes...what is required is to see the post in the main thread, but anchored to the exact post.
As Paul says, the post tags will do this quite nicely. |
