Default Want to upgrade vB2>vB3, but have some concerns...

hello all,

i'm currently running vB 2.3.5 with vBPortal 2.3.0cr2. i want to make the upgrade to vB3 (and vBP3), but i have a few questions first, and i'm hoping someone can help out.

i'd rather not 'jump right in' to the upgrade. what i'm envisioning is a gradual process, but i don't know if it is possible:

i'd like to keep my current setup going, while i install and tweak vB3 and vBP3. so i guess what i'd like is for vB3 and vBP3 to be installed in a different directory, and just read from the same database as my vB2/vBP2.. is this possible? and if not, what can i do to set up vB3 for testing/tweaking before i go live with it? are there detailed instructions anywhere on how to do this?

hopefully i was able to get my point across ok. thanks in advance to anyone who can help.

Eh, not really, personaly I am not sure why any one runs vBP, its still phpnuke and it still has all the security holes as phpnuke.

However, the best way to test said idea, would be to create a backup of your current forum and restore it to a new database and then do the upgrade process and see how everythin goes, get to know vB3, make a style maybe, then make another backup of you current site, download your vB3 style if you made one and preform the upgrade on your live site. then import the vb3 style.

thanks for your quick response. can you recommend an alternative to vBPortal? it has some features i really like (reviews, front page blocks, etc), but if there's a better alternative, i wouldn't mind trying it.

as for the upgrade, your explanation makes sense, with the exception of one thing.. if i'm going to backup and make a new db from my current db, and perform the 'test' upgrade on the new one, can i do so with my current file/directory structure on my site? won't that affect the current vB2 setup?

i guess that's the only part where i'm confused. do i need to backup/copy my entire site (not just the db) for the test?

thanks again for your help. it's MUCH appreciated.

You might want to look at vBa CMPS or vBindex.

Your going to make the backup, and upload the vB3 files into a new folder (that should be password protected) that your licenses allows you to do for testing purposes.
