Need help for my main forum page

I want to get rid of the moderator's colum (it is totally redundant) and replace it with pictures of books that are higly recommended on our site by members, that can be clicked on and the users gets taken to the affiliate to buy those books. I have read everything I can find about removing the moderator's column but to be quite honest I am so lost as to where to even start.

I did read the "How to Install Hacks for Newbies" and am working on getting an ftp program so I can upload it to our server from my pc myself, but am completely lost as to where and how to start. I am learning the ropes from scratch and would appreciate any help in layman's terms (the smaller the words, the better
