Default Companys think the extension is a sign of proffesionalism?

I was talking to a friend of mine the other and he said that one of his clients, when he said he would code the management of customer information in php and index it using mysql databases. The guy asked him what the .ending would be, he did not understand so he asked?
"Pardon my ignorance, but what .ending?"
so the potential client answers
"You know, those .asp things that some big companies use"
so my friend replies
"Ah I see, it would be php"
So then the potential client asks what is php, and they get into discusion about this.
Then my friend told me, that the potential client said this.
"I want this to be proffesional, I have been to many sites, and they have the .asp ending, it makes there site and background of there site look proffesional, can you do the job in the .asp?"
So my friend (not wanting to loose a customer, said sure, so what he did was set up .htaccess and rename the file to .asp (as a joke, because he did not want to put his full potential and effort into a work, when it wouldn't be appreciated because it didn't have a certain extension) and format php, though he was not hired, as one of the employees said that it was php.

Now what do you think? I think its completly absurd that people might think asp 'looks' proffesional, I am not sure, it does not make a difference to me, but I need input on this, is this guy crazy, or is this a common thing between companies hehe.

I found this a bit funney while my friend was telling me this, as the issue of the extension implying a certain reputation to the company really did not trigger any discussion before.

If anyone else has had similar funney events share them please

It is true that most of the big sites use ASP instead of PHP, but it's stupid to emulate it like that, just makes it harder for the developers.

This also encouraged me to start learning ASP, and MS-Access

Never know what some rich dumb a** will pay thousands of dollers to have his reputation based apon using a certain coding language for his site.

So the guys basicly saying it i set up a .htaccess and change all my templates to link to .asp then my site will bring in more hits? .

Php can do the job of ASP anyday IMO, i will still learn ASP, but php is what i will use for all my personal projects.

Some large companies have a strange fear of using software which they don't buy from another large company. Hence they won't use "free" software such as PHP. And yet they trust something from Microsoft, because they have to pay for it.

As long as the software does the job I don't make muhc of a distinction over how it's written it, unless of course x language is faster then y language for example. But bringing that point in, php is faster then asp (not case with .net when running out of the box though).

I do however use a system without any extensions (PATH_INFo servering as all paremeters) or I change extensions to something that matches my site's domain name. It's slihtly harder to exploit a system from a web users persepctive with less info known about the server or how it runs.
