The problem I have is if i turn registrations off server load is where it should be but if i turn it on server load goes way up due to register.php. i am running v 4.2. i have avs and issw installed and i get no email about a new user ie spammers but server load goes up. any thoiughts?

Install this and see how you go https://vborg.vbsupport.ru/showthread.php?t=268208 it's probably bots hitting the registration page but of course the can't register, you should also disallow it in your robots.txt
