Federal prosecutors have shut down one of the world's largest file-sharing sites, Megaupload.com, on charges of violating piracy laws -- a day after a 24-hour blackout of popular websites such as Wikipedia drew national attention to the issue.
"This action is among the largest criminal copyright cases ever brought by the United States," the Justice department said in a statement about the indictment.

A source has just informed TorrentFreak that the FBI are currently detaining everyone at the ISP Cogent Communications? headquarters in Washington DC, in connection with a Mega-related search warrant.
Ignorance knows no bounds. This is just further proof that SOPA/PIPA has/had nothing to do with protecting copyrights, it was about censorship - this is a perfect example of how they don't even need SOPA ... they have no trouble as it is making a US law reach all the way to New Zealand.
I don't know if today is a worse day to be a website operator or a datacenter worker.
Update 14 from site linked in SuperTaz's post states that there was a reported 27,000+ PC's involved in the DOJ attack... that along with the other recent events of the past few months including SOPA and PIPA make it seem as though we are the lowly mortals caught between a battle of the Gods and Titans in ancient Greek mythology... who's who though, that's my question?
