Wanting to add more than the default 3 for profile privacy.

I find where it calls for it in Profile.php and the template modifyprivacy_bit, and can add more usergroups in and add the phrases for it, but how does it know what is what, how can I make it so users can select the ones I have entered and work? Is there also a way to change this so users can select more than 1 group for each?
