Protecting a subdirectory 3rd party app

Question, I just implemented a subscription section of the site, is there a way to install something like coppermine or just any old custom gallery to mysite.com/subscriptionpics and only allow subscribed users to use it?

I had the thought of using a .htaccess file and a forum that only subscribed users had access to and thought maybe of using the .htaccess to block all traffic that didn't originate from that thread. Just a thought, it would be much better to just be able to block all people not in usergroup 6.
