Password Problem *Really Strange*

I have a user whose password wasn't working so he IMed me and asked me to change it for him. I did and changed it to a common word. Then I tried logging in with it and it wouldn't work, he can't log onto it either. I am changing the password in the admin CP however it doesn't seem to be working despite saying "changes have been saved "

Anybody run into this problem before?

updated: I have created a new username with a common password. However if I log out and try to log back in, that password does not work. Any clue as to what is going on?
