Default "What Annoys Moderators the Most": Rebuttal

I saw that article linked to from another site and decided to respond to parts of it. I actually know Kyledude and think he's a great guy, but there's parts of the article I disagree with.

3) IT WAS A HAXXOR!

No it wasn't. No one hacked your account, and no one posted the offensive message that you polluted the site with. YOU made the post, YOU broke the rules, YOU should take the responsibility for it. No one is going to hack a forum acount, let's use common sense. If they really wanted to hack something, they would hack a checking account or something worthwhile... They're not oing to wate their time getting a random person banned off of a random site.

Haha, you'd be surprised. Why would someone waste their time hacking a forum account? Because they're bored, for the excitement, or to troll someone, and because they don't want to break the law or steal money. It happens, especially on big sites, which I'm sure the flagship forum for vBulletin counts as.

5) Abuse of the dispute system

I've moderated a few sites with a dispute system, and what new moderators will quickly discover is that people abuse it and act like idiots through it. I have actually gotten a dispute saying this: "WTF DUH I DUH"... ...Abusing something meant to help the members of the forum out doesn't sit well with me, nor does it sit well with any other vet to moderating. Don't do it. That's all I have to say.

It's one thing to punish someone for harassing moderators over a dispute system, but to punish them for saying something like "WTF DUH I DUH" is just internet tough guy behavior.

9) ATTNing moderators to ask about their job

We have a job to do, believe it or not. By making me open your topic to see your idiotic post, you're wasting time that I could be using to make the site a better place.

Because God forbid somebody get in the way of your moderating to make conversation. What a waste of time!

10) THIS SITE SUCKS!

Then don't go to it. I don't bloody care if you think that a blank site is better than the one you're spamming with your complaints. If you don't like the way the site is ran or if you don't like the content, then leave and do us all a favor in doing so.

I agree for the most part, but there's a difference between being disruptive and constructive criticism.

11) Leaving topics without good reason
If you have real-life things that make you have to leave, or an extremely good reason why you're leaving, don't make a post about it. It causes controversy, drama, and above all, it causes the moderators headaches.

How does it cause drama to say you're leaving for real life reasons?

12) This site is going downhill!

...Because you're making it do so, idiot! No one cares if you think the site is going downhill. If you seriously believe this, why are you still here?! Go away and post about it elsewhere, or better yet, don't!

Ha, I agree with this one.

Heh, vBulletin.org probably gets this twice a week now. Sorry, couldn't resist saying that based on many of the complaints in the site feedback forum here.

As you can probably guess, I also know the person who wrote the article, and while I don't agree with every point in the article or every point you've mentioned, I do have a few guesses to the reasoning behind and a few responses to your points.

This was probably added due to people thinking the dispute system was a reply system, as has been the case a whole lot on my own site with the visitor messages and reports. For example, there's only so much:

Quote:
Hello!
As a report reason when it should be a reply, despite clearly labelled icons and a warning message on the page before you mention something about it.

Probably due to quite a few members who end up writing a huge 'site going downhill' rant along with the 'I'm leaving' part, claiming the forum is corrupt then returning two days later as if nothing happened. I've known people do this like, five times in a row. Not much a problem if it's a real reason rather than complaining, but the latter is usually more likely.

True, constructive criticism is more useful, but it's also rather rare in these cases.

Why are you responding to a thread that is on another forum? Nobody know the original thread you are replying to (you have not even provided a link), those who wrote that thread, do not read here, so why trying to discuss their post here?

Here's the link he was referring to:

https://vborg.vbsupport.ru/showthread.php?t=190381

And the person who wrote the original article on my own site gave me permission to add it here with credit, so at least one person involved in the article reads the posts here.

(It was originally posted here: http://dsultimate.net/Board/upload/s...ad.php?t=11213 but that's just a copy of the article linked to on vBulletin.org, kept in a private forum to avoid search engines indexing it before the version here and on my own website).

You get treated the way you treat others. Let's say you come to a site and make suggestions and your met with sarcasm then it will be no surprise that your members will give back what you give to them. Respect is earned not given because you have a colored title.

We can hate things about certain areas of running a forum andor how people run a site but the problem lies way before the here and now but rather the past when people thought they could treat you in a manner because they thought This member won't be here long I'm sure there won't be any repercussions in the long run.

If members are stating their concerns you cannot place this as being argumentative or whining and look deeper into the problem which usually starts at home.

What annoys me are the kind of people that will put their stamp on a site (that they don't even own) and have whined in the past about not being listened to but can't see that they have become the people they whined to. Me? I would put this down to concerns and best interests to the site but in this present day it's now classed as whining.

Laziness is a factor that should be included. Generally, people become complacent and lazy and simply burnout and have nothing more to offer. Whilst they would be just as good as a member a higher position would be a case of prolonging yourself to more stagnation and rub off on your members who would then question their concerns. Whined if your living in the here and now and haven't time traveled back to the past aka the good ole days.
