I remember when Paul M. used them and there was quite a stink made over it. Are they allowed now? I asked because of this in the Live Topic thread:

I'm not blasting Live Topic, in fact, I think callbacks are not a bad thing. I'm just asking for some policy clarification.
The rule is not specific to call-backs. Any hidden feature is not allowed. The user must know what the modification will be doing before installing it. So any "feature" must be communicated to the users prior to installation.
