Another Idea I just though of. I'd like to have ranks for users that have been members for a certain period of time (ex 1mo, 3mo, 6mo, 1yr, 2yr etc). But was wondering if there was a way to do it without creating that many different user groups and doing promotions. Any thoughts?

Never seen a modification that does this. I would suggest you stick with promotions (you may want to increase the allowed PMs for members that are "older", etc in the future, by using promotions, this would be easy).
