security question

i occassionally have members contact me because they've forgotten their password and no longer have access to their original e-mail accounts. it becomes rather tedious to try and verify that they are who they claim to be in order to reset a password for them (since i don't want to turn over access to somebody's account to any random person who contacts me by e-mail). if there were a security question that the user had to fill out upon registration that i could refer to in order to verify their identity, this process would be much easier. for example,

In what city were you born? Pittsburgh

if the answer were only visible to the admin of the site from the Admin Control Panel, then this would solve the problem.

i've looked at the user profile field manager, but am not sure creating such a question and setting it's field as private is sufficient. if there is a way for a member to see this info about another members registration, then this method won't work.

so my question... for what i'm requesting, can i implement it using the user profile field manager or is a hack of some sort required?

If the field is marked as private, the field will only be visible to other users who have usergroup permission to view private profile fields.
