Web Site Defaced

Question: If your web site is defaced via the CMS (not) VB, and you know your cpanel was not affected, can you just go into MySQL and dump the tables of that specific area of the CMS? Someone got in and dropped a script in my add news section, along with claiming ownership of my web site.

So, could anyone please tell me if the CMS just stores the data that is input into the CMS directly to a table in MySqL? And not written to a file?

Need some help, thought I would try from the people I trust most at VB.
