Setting various hompage categories depth

Does anyone have some coding snippets that I could add in to make some of my homepage categories show up with a depth of one and some others with a depth of two.

Reason I'm asking is that I'm setting up a board for mmorpg's. A lot of mmorpg's can have up to twenty four classes and as the guild expands by having some players migrate to other mmorpg's, new categories would then be created for said mmorpg's and after a while, the board will get too long and need to set categories to a depth of one.

But there will be a couple of categories for off topics and the such at the home page index, that I would like the categories to be set at a depth of two.

In admin, there is an option to set all to a depth of one or two, but no option for some at one and some other categories to two.
