Is there any way to make an exception for the google bots / yahoo spiders etc?

Right now people have to login to see threads,

but i want google & yahoo and the rest to index posts & threads on my forum for more search hits.

Any idea how to do this?

Not by default.

I believe there is a modification around here that allows this. The function is limited and really doesn't compare to what IPB offers. With IPB you can choose to give the search engine bots any usergroup you wish and then decide which skin they will use.

This is great for SEO - no matter how many Nay sayers there may be. IPB has proven this works, and works well without any negative points.

That would be considered cloaking and can have you removed from search engines.
