There are a number of ways. Search for right / left column mods here and/or look at vBadvanced...

Question about mods in general: If I installed something like the collumn mods, does it match your skin? And what if I installed it, and then LATER got a new skin. Would it change to match it? Same thing with vBadvanced.

Yes, I believe the mods adapt to your style. They don't change your CSS file.
