Customized counter in one (1) forum

Hello,

I'd like to be able to place a custom number field on the Post New Topic or Post Reply "submit" pages of one specific forum (called "blogs") so users can manually enter mileage covered for that day when they make a blog entry (each forum thread belongs to one registered user). I want an ongoing/running total of all the mileage entries and make it accessible externally on the main page so it could be called by visitors to the site or non-registered users as well as registered users (no unregistered users may post in the forums).

The idea is to say on the main page, "Our membership has ridden 'x' miles/km", based on what people enter into this field in their blogs.

Is there a mod out there that can do something similar or is there a tricky-quick way to do this? I'm a novice with PHP at this point, but willing to hack away.
