Left column, welcome, color

Three quick questions that are easy, I'm just not getting it

. See image for details.

1) How do I change the left column background to all white?

2) How do I get rid of the gap between logo and navbar (it seems to be caused by the welcome headers)?

3) How do I make the top of the left column the same height as the navbar?

Any help is appreciated
