Displaying custom fields

I have some custom fields set up for my site. For example, field6 is the member's real name.

If I type $post[field6] in the membersinfo template or the postbit template, their real name appears -- perfect. But that doesn't work in every template.

I really want real names to appear on the 'Who's Online' page, and some others.

What code can I add into files/templates so that custom fields can be displayed? Presumably I need to tell it to query the database and get the data first?

Any ideas?
