Custom Display name..?

I have gone though this about a year ago but i cant remember that far back

and i lost all my files So anyway to make a long story short.

What i am looking for is a mod or hack to change it so that ever instance (with the exception of the login) Does not display a username instead it will display a custom field

I know how to change the post bit's etc all that is fine but what i am looking @ now is trying to change a few things i think are probaly in the php such as the online & who is online as well when you click a sub's name

Sorry if this confusing

any help would be great thanks.
